I paint abstract designs using acrylic on canvas.
My designs originate
from pen on paper sketches of abstract shapes and designs. These
sketches are very subconscious in their design. I do not plan
or think through what I am putting on paper. I continuously draw
with out thought or critique of what is being put on paper. Many
of these sketches are very detailed. In order to focus on a particular
area of a sketch, I select smaller sections that catch my eye.
I accomplish this with paper made frames that allow me to focus
more precisely on different areas. Once the area is selected,
I sketch out the design on to the canvas with a light pencil.
At this point I may add additional shapes to the painting to create
a balance on the canvas. Next, I organize a variety of colors
to use on my painting. I paint like color sections at a time due
to the lengthy drying process of acrylic.
Water based acrylic
paint is composed of minute particles of plastic acrylic resin
suspended in water and pigment. My paintings require no finishing
varnish or sealant due to the strong durable paint that forms
as the water evaporates from the acrylic and the resin particles
fuse together.
The vibrant and bold
colors of acrylic paint are appealing to me. Before I begin the
painting process I determine the colors I should apply to each
area of my canvas. But, inevitably those choices change as I see
each color unfold on the canvas.
Acrylic paint’s
thick texture also attracts me. I utilize the thickness of acrylic
by creating depth in my shapes by applying my brush to make impressions
in the thickness of the acrylic.
Painting is a great
escape and incredible learning experience for me and offers many
surprises.
